After two months of consultation with the food industry, on August 27, 2020, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has finally released amendment no. 3 of Food Regulations 2020. The amendment is a step towards updating SFA’s Regulatory provisions to align with the global standards. The purpose of this amendment was to streamline the usage of new food additives and extend the usage of already existing food additives.
As per the Food (Amendment No. 3) Regulations 2020, the following changes are made to the Sale of Food Act (Chapter 283) of the SFA:
- Modification to the definition of food additives such as steviol glycosides, butter and other sweetening agents
- Amendment to the allowable usage quantity for various Specified Food
Effective from August 31, 2020, manufacturers producing the above-mentioned food additives, are required to meet the Regulatory requirements of the new Food Regulations 2020. Additionally, manufacturers entering the Singapore food market after August 31, 2020, are also required to align with the latest regulations to achieve overall compliance.
